What happens to the waste?

Our goal is to keep close to 100% of collected pet waste out of landfill.

PAWCycle starts by collecting pet waste separately from ordinary garbage. This creates a cleaner and more consistent material stream that can be measured, tested, and prepared for recovery.

Our long-term goal is to divert up to 100% of the collected material from landfill and turn it into useful end products such as compost, fertilizer, renewable gas, electricity, recycled materials, or other viable products. Each step will be tested and confirmed safe before it is accepted by receiving partners, permitted by regulators, and proven affordable to operate.

Produce Useful Energy, Soil Products, or Recycled Materials

Current work

Build a reliable separate collection system

PAWCycle provides the bins, approved bags or litter, identification, pickup records, and service tracking. Keeping pet waste separate gives us the dependable volume and material information needed to develop the next stages of recovery.

Next step

Test the separation equipment

Equipment testing is being done to determine the viability of separating plastic from pet waste. Successful separation would create two distinct potential energy and resource streams—the prepared organic material and the recovered plastic—with the goal of leaving close to 0% for landfill.

Safety step

Pasteurize before commercial use

Pasteurization is required to reduce pathogens before the prepared organic material can be used commercially. PAWCycle will validate the required temperature, treatment time, equipment, monitoring, and testing before any commercial use.

Future goal

Recover useful products and energy

Potential outcomes include compost, fertilizer, renewable gas, electricity, recycled plastic products, and other uses that testing may establish. As technology advances and each part of the system is validated, PAWCycle will update this site with progress toward the near-zero-landfill goal.

Why PAWCycle supplies the materials

The bags, litter, and packaging are designed to work as one collection system.

Using the same approved materials in every PAWCycle bin helps keep the collected stream consistent. That makes it easier to separate the pet waste from the plastic and find the best recovery use for both.

Dog-waste bags

Dog-waste customers use PAWCycle-approved bags. Filled bags are placed in a PAWCycle residential bin or in a PAWCycle station at an apartment, condo, park, or other managed property. Using one known bag type keeps many unrelated plastics from being mixed together.

Cat litter, waste, and packaging

The cat service is designed as one complete system. PAWCycle organic litter is delivered in PAWCycle packaging, and the used litter, cat waste, and approved empty packaging are placed in the PAWCycle residential bin as directed. Matching the litter and packaging to the collection system helps keep the material consistent for future separation and treatment.

Why consistency matters later

Using the same known materials makes it easier to separate the organic material from the plastic and choose the best use for both streams. PAWCycle’s long-term goal is to recover useful products or energy from close to 100% of the collected material and send close to 0% to landfill.

Simple service rule: Use the PAWCycle bags, PAWCycle organic litter, and approved PAWCycle packaging provided for the service. Together, these materials support PAWCycle’s goal of diverting close to 100% of collected pet waste from landfill.

PAWCycle account tools are part of the platform.

The completed account area will support residential pickup requests, service records, approved-material orders, property reporting, invoices, and account communication. The account portal will be added in a later build step.

How residential service works

Individual households use their own registered PAWCycle service.

Residential service is separate from apartment and condo station contracts. It is designed for eligible individual homes within an activated curbside route.

Check the residential service area

The pet owner enters a postal code and registers household interest. PAWCycle uses residential demand and route density to determine when an area can launch.

Activate the household account

When the route is available, the customer reviews the approved package, purchases the required PAWCycle bin and materials, and activates the residential service.

Use the correct pickup method

Dog-waste customers use PAWCycle-approved bags, request pickup through the bin’s QR code when an earlier paid pickup is needed, and place the bin at the agreed curbside point. Cat-litter customers use PAWCycle organic litter and follow the configured collection and litter-delivery cycle.

Collection and return

PAWCycle collects the dog-waste bin from the curb and returns it to the same curbside point after servicing. The service visit is recorded in the customer account.

Residential bin recommendations

One live calculator is the source of truth.

PAWCycle no longer uses separate hard-coded bin tables for dog-only, cat-only, and combined households. Dog bin recommendations come from dog count, individual dog sizes, calculated waste load, collection interval, and practical capacity. Cat bin recommendations use the current cat-service scale.

For combined dog + cat households, the website shows the dog and cat capacity recommendations separately. The final number of shared household bins is confirmed during paid enrollment after the combined load is validated. This prevents a static example elsewhere on the site from contradicting the live calculator.

Future building program

Future Condo and Apartment Service

Condo and apartment service will not be included in the initial launch.

Small in-unit PAWCycle bin

Participating residents may use one small in-unit PAWCycle bin for:

  • Cat litter waste
  • Dog waste from balconies or indoor pet-relief areas

Scheduled building disposal procedure

  1. Tie the liner securely.
  2. Carry the tied liner to the designated basement or collection area.
  3. Place it inside the shared PAWCycle building bin.
  4. Return the empty in-unit bin to the unit.

Required waste handling

Waste must remain inside a tied liner. Residents must not dump loose litter or pet waste into the shared building bin.

During the landfill phase, dog and cat waste may share the same central bin. When Site 1 begins processing trials, PAWCycle may temporarily separate dog and cat waste into different central bins for testing.

Apartments, condos and townhouse communities

Dedicated collection for apartments, condos and shared properties.

This service is arranged by an authorized property owner, property manager, condo board, or other multi-residential decision-maker. Residents use the installed PAWCycle stations and PAWCycle-supplied bags; they do not register the property or request individual station pickups. PAWCycle assesses the site, recommends station quantity and placement, installs the stations, and manages recurring service.

How apartments and condos work

The property arranges service. Residents use the stations.

Apartment and condo service is a property contract. It does not depend on individual resident registrations or residential curbside pickup requests.

Authorized contact requests an assessment

A property owner, manager, condo board, municipal representative, or other authorized decision-maker provides the site information.

PAWCycle assesses the property

PAWCycle reviews capacity, entrances, walking routes, station placement, service distance, vehicle access, and route complexity. Most reviews begin remotely.

Recommendation and quote

PAWCycle recommends station quantity and locations, identifies any complexity charges, and prepares the service proposal. A site visit is used when needed.

Installation and recurring service

After approval, PAWCycle installs and registers the stations, then services them under the property contract. Residents use the PAWCycle-supplied bags and deposit them in the installed stations.

Property capacity model

Dog population affects capacity — not final station count by itself.

PAWCycle now calculates the Capacity Requirement from the updated dog-waste planning values. The final property recommendation still uses all three approved factors.

1. Capacity Requirement

Uses estimated dog population, known dog-size mix where available, upper-end planning load, practical bin capacity, and service frequency.

2. Placement Requirement

Considers entrances, exits, walking routes, green spaces, and where residents actually need a station.

3. Service-Distance Requirement

Considers separate service zones, station spacing, vehicle access, walking distance, and route labour.

Waste volume never determines final station quantity by itself. The complimentary property assessment confirms the final configuration.

Future property planning

Live apartment and condo planning estimate.

Enter the property information and, where known, the dog-size mix. Capacity updates immediately using the current dog-waste planning values. Final station quantity still depends on Capacity, Placement, and Service-Distance Requirements and remains subject to PAWCycle’s complimentary property assessment.
